Home Cooking Peers

Do you need help figuring out how to prepare simple meals within your budget? Do you feel like you need more support in the kitchen? Not sure what to make for dinner or how to best shop to meet your budget? To make your transition to campus smoother, the Department of Health & Wellness would like to offer you access to our very own Home Cooking Peers.

Our coaches are trained in various areas such as cooking simple, healthy, affordable recipes, budgeting, meal planning, and kitchen safety. So no matter what resource you need, you will have access to us via our flexible appointment system! Join us for a one-on-one appointment, or feel free to invite your housemates to learn along with you.

UCSB Cooks

In this multi week cooking series, not only can you learn how to cook but you can also meet new friends in a relaxing environment. From developing knife skills to creating white bean pasta, we are confident that you will grow from being a part of this program. Because UCSB Cooks has a high demand, there is an application process. However, we encourage you to apply and we hope to see you soon! In the meantime, if you would like to get a better view into what our Cooks program is like, scroll below for testimonials, pictures, cooking tutorials from the Spring of 2020, and fliers on food substitutions and oil smoke points.

Budget Bites: Oatmeal with Apples and Honey

1.5 oz oatmeal
1/2 cup water
1 apple
1 oz honey 

Budget Bites: Oatmeal with Cranberries and Peanut Butter

1 cup water
1.5 oz oatmeal
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 tablespoon cranberries

Budget Bites: Lentil Soup

2 carrots
1/2 onion
1 stalk of celery
2 potatoes
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 cup water
1 oz lentils
1 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dried basil leaves

Budget Bites: Burrito Bowl

1 cup water
1 cup rice
1/2 head of lettuce
3 tomatoes
3 tablespoons tomato sauce

1 teaspoon garlic
1 oz tomatoes
3 tablespoons corn
1 teaspoon pepper
Bit of parsley

Budget Bites: Chicken Breast, Lentils, and Salad

Lentils:                                     
1/2 cup water                               
1 oz dried lentils           
Pinch of salt                               

Salad:
1 cup mixed greens
1 teaspoon olive oil
1 teaspoon vinegar

 

Chicken Breast:
Pinch of pepper

1 teaspoon olive oil

1 oz brown rice
2 pinches of salt
1 oz dried black beans
1 oz broccoli crowns
1 oz cheese
1 oz salsa
1 oz sour cream
